PRESS RELEASE: Indonesian Fine Arts to Show Off at Venice Biennale 2013
Loading...The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy endorses the participation of five Indonesian artists in the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale which took place in Venice, Italy, June to November 2013. The five artists taking part in the oldest and most prestigious contemporary fine art exhibition are Albert Yonathan Setyawan, Eko Nugroho, Entang Wiharso, Sri Astari, and Titarubi. The 500 square meter Indonesia Pavilion located in the Arsenale will be the showcase for their best works.
The presence of the artists in Indonesian Pavilion at one of the main venues in the event marks the readiness of Indonesian fine art to show off in the world stage.
“International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is the most prestigious contemporary fine art exhibition in the world. We are displaying world – class works of our Indonesian artists, and at the same time promoting Indonesian tourism and creative industries,”
said Deputy Minister Sapta Nirwandar at a press conference on Indonesia participation preparations in the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale at the ministry office, Thursday (01/10).
Sapta said that government, in this regard Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, consistently encourages Indonesian works of art to go international; in this case the ministry will allocate Rp 2.5 billion for Indonesian artists participation in the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The budget is supposed to be seen as an investment rather than expenditure, as it will give positive impact on Indonesia image building.
Restu Purnati Imansari Kusumaningrum of Bumi Purnati (promotor of participation) said,
“The ministry support is of great significance to Indonesian art, through Indonesian Pavilion at the Arsenale we have the opportunity to place our works of art equal to world’s top art works, and not less importantly, we become the subject of practice for world’s work of art.”
Indonesian position as the subject of practice for world’s work of art is seen when Bumi Purnati Artistic Council decided the concept Sakti (magical) as the theme for Indonesia Pavilion. The concept conveys Indonesian values that derived from cultural heritage and is in line with the concept of the II Palazzo Encyclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace) exhibition announced by Venice Biennale curator Massimiliano Gioni on October 25 last year.
Through Sakti concept, according to curator Rifky Effendy, Indonesia offers the importance of diversity to the world. Five artists participation in the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is considered (by Bumi Purnati Artistic Council) could best translate the concept.
