Indonesian has some of the very best waves in the world, and their locations are spectacular and exotic. Here the swells come from the south and southwest; so all the islands that have coastlines facing in those directions get waves. These include Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and Timor.

Surfing in BaliThe best time to surf is April to September. The easiest is to head for Bali, where the waves are superb, but beaches can be crowded. Most famous are the Ulu Watu breaks. White beaches and dramatic cliffs add to the attraction.

For more remote locations head for the Lagundri Bay on Nias island, the Garajagan or Ombak Tujuh in East Java and the Cempi Bay in Sumbawa. Although accommodation is simple, the food is good, the local people are friendly and the waves are guaranteed to be uncrowded. The surfers’ paradise in Bali is Dreamland.

When choosing the trips you should, of course take into account your own ability. Many of the best breaks require skill and experience, and on sharp coral reefs there is a genuine element of risk.
