The nation’s capital, Jakarta, has a remarkable history. Its history as a trading center started as a small harbor called Sunda Kelapa, but its actual founding dates back to the year 1527, when it was named Jayakarta because of the neighboring Sultanate of Banten. The name Jayakarta means City of great victory. During the 17th century, it served as a capital of the Dutch East Indies with the name Batavia. Reminders of this period can seen today in the architecture of some of the northern parts of the city. When Indonesian Independence secured it was renamed Jakarta, and serves today as the center of government, business and industry.
Jakarta’s architecture reflects the history of outside influences, which came and left their mark on this city. The Taman Fatahillah Restoration Project, begun in the early 1970’s has restored one of the oldest Jakarta, known as Old Batavia or Kota, to one of the most picturesque areas of the entire city. The Old Supreme Court Building National Museum of Fine Arts and houses part of the superb Chinese porcelain collection of former Vice President, Adam Malik. The Old Town Hall has become the Jakarta Museum, displaying such rare items.
The National Monument (Monas)
The 137-metre tall marble obelisk is topped with a flame coated with 35 kg of gold and represents the people’s determination to achieve freedom. It towers over Merdeka (freedom) Square and serves as Jakarta’s most prominent landmark. The monument is open to public. An elevator carries visitors to the top, offering a bird’s eye view across the city to the sea.
The National Museum
Located on the West Side of Merdeka Square, the National Museum probably the best museum in Indonesia. U.M.C. Rademacher established it in 1778 under the auspices of Batavia Association of Arts and Science. It offers historical, prehistorically, archaeological and ethnographical aspects of Indonesia through its extensive collection of artifacts and relics from the Stone Age.
Taman Ria Remaja Senayan
Located in Jalan Pintu VIII Senayan, this Park has a beautiful lake for boating, canoeing and paths. It also has facilities for children such as bumpercars, a miniature train and merry-go-round. Evening entertainment live music and popular local comedians. Open daily from 16.00 – 22.00 PM, Saturday to midnight, holiday days from 08.00 – 22.00 PM.
Satria Mandala Museum
The Museum of the Armed Forces displays exhibits on the development of the Indonesian Armed Force the struggle for the nation’s independence, and other military relics. Open daily, except Saturday and holiday days.
Perintis Kemerdekaan Building and The Soekarno-Hatta Monument
Both are located in Jalan Proklamasi 56, on the site of the former residence of the late President Soekarno. It was where the nation’s independence was proclaimed. By the Perintis Kemerdekaan Building stands the Soekarno-Hatta Monument, in commemoration of the nations first President and Vice President. Open daily from 8.00 AM.
Jalan Surabaya
This street is located in one of the city’s ‘upscale’ residential areas and is wellknown for its flea market. This market sells a wide range of goods, some of them antiquities, including ornate, lamps, porcelain, brassware. Bargaining is necessary, as is the skill to distinguish true antiques from the artificial ones.
Sunda Kelapa
Sunda Kelapa, also known as Pasar Ikan (Fish Market), is located in the far north of the city at the mouth of the Ciliwung River. This is where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Kingdom of Pajajaran in the early 16th century. The fish catch of the day was auctioned in the early morning at the old fish market. The street leading to it was lined with shops selling all sort of shells, dehydrated turtles, lobsters and everything else the seafarer might need.
Indonesia in Miniature Park (TMMI)
The idea behind Taman Mini is to give the visitor a glimpse of the diversity of the Indonesian archipelago. This extensive park represents Indonesia’s 27 provinces and their traditional characteristic most strikingly in the exact regional architecture of the province. It has its own orchid varieties are grown, also a bird park with a walk in aviary, a fauna museum and recreational grounds with a swimming pool and restaurants.
Keong Emas Imax Theater (Golden Snail Theatre)
Located in Taman Mini is the Imax Theater, which presents “Beautiful Indonesia” on a gigantic screen with the latest Imax system. Oopen from 11.00 AM.
Komodo Museum
Build in the form of the Varanus Komodiensis (the only pre-historic giant lizard found exclusively on Komodo Island). It exhibits dioramas depicting the amazing variety of fauna indigenous to Indonesia. Open daily from 8.00 AM – 15.00 PM.
Stamp Museum
The stamp Museum at Taman Mini has an attractive collection of stamps once issued in the country. The museum is ideal for the philatelist. Open daily, except Monday, from 8.00 AM.
Ragunan Zoo
Jakarta’s zoo is situated in the suburb of Ragunan in the southern part of the city. Indigenous animals such as Komodo dragon, tapir, Java tiger, wild ox and brightly colored birds can be seen in this zoo. Open Daily from 8.00 AM to 18.00 PM.
Condet
This village of southern Jakarta is a protected area where the old rural life style of Jakarta is preserved and is also famed for its fruit orchards.
Bird Market (Pasar Burung)
Tropical bird lovers wont want to miss Pasar Burung at Jalan Pramuka with its amazing array of colorful birds, including the unique “perkutut” song bird, the pride of the Javanese people. Open daily from 08.00 AM.
Lubang Buaya Heroes Monument
Situated in the southeast of the city about 20 km from down town, it is a memorial park dedicated to the six army generals and one army officer who where slain on October 1, 1965, in an abortive communist inspired coup d’etat. The centerpiece is the Pancasila Monument with statues of the seven heroes, standing near the old well in which their bodies were thrown after having been tortured and executed by communist militia squads.
TIM Art Center
The focal point of cultural activities in Jakarta is Taman Ismail Marzuki or TIM for short. It is said to be the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and consists of exhibitions hall, theaters, an academy of arts, archives building and a planetarium. There are performances almost every night with everything from traditional and modern dance, local and foreign film festivals, poetry readings and theatre, to music of every style imaginable. TIM serves not only as the center of contemporary Indonesian art, but has become in recent years a central showcase for international performing arts in Indonesia. A monthly program of events is tourist officers and is listed in the Jakarta Post Newspaper.
Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu)
This group of islands in the Jakarta Bay offers a haven away from the bustle of city life. There are golden beaches fringed with coconut palms. The surrounding water is paradise for skin divers. They are filled with a myriad of tropical fish, which live among the multicolored corals. The islands can be reached from Tanjung Priok or Pasar Ikan (Fish Market – Sunda Kelapa) by ferry or by chartered boat. Some of the islands in this group developed for tourism are Pulau Bidadari, Pulau Ayer, Pulau Laki atau Pulau Putri. Pulau Tanjung near Putri has an airstrip. There are cabins for hire having fresh water on Pulau Air and Pulau Bidadari only. The Pulau Putri Paradise Co. has developed Pulau Putri, Pulau Melintang, Pulau Petondan and Pulau Papa Theo as a holiday with cottages, restaurants, diving and sailing facilities.
The Marina Jaya Ancol
This is a special port for yachts, motor and sail boats to Pulau Seribu. This is also the place for marine jet skis canoes, sail boats, wind surfers and fishing gear are all for hire here. Stalls along the beach serve snack while tents are available for sunbathers and sea-lovers.
Jaya Ancol Dreamland
This is Jakarta’s largest and most popular recreation park. Its extensive range of attraction including fresh-water aquariums, swimming pools, an artificial lagoon for fishing and boating, a bowling alley, as assortment of nightclubs, restaurants and massage parlors. The Ancol complex includes a Marina, Dufan (Fantasy Land), a gold course, and hotels. The “Pasar Seni” or art market has a varied collection of Indonesian handicraft, paintings and souvenirs on sale. An open-air theatre features live performance artist.
Fantasy Land
A 9,5 hectare (23.75 acres) entertainment park located inside the Ancol Dreamland. It is the Indonesian version of Disneyland and is great for kids. The park also offers a number of restaurants and souvenir shops. It is open on Monday to Friday from 2.00 to 9.00 PM. On Saturday from 2.00 to 10.00 PM and on holidays from 10.00 AM to 9.00 PM.
Maritime Museum
Two of the original warehouses from the first trading post of the Dutch East Indies Company in Java on Maritim Museum. Exhibits include large models of boats from various islands. The old harbor stands nearby. Open from 8.00 AM – 2.00 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. It closes on Monday.
The Wayang Museum
This museum on the western side of Taman Fatahillah in “The Old Town” area has the finest displays puppets in Indonesia including puppets from all parts of Indonesia and other parts of southeast Asia a wooden and leather puppets displayed here represent the finest craftsmanship in this particular form of theater. The museum also shows shortened performances of the wayang kulit leather puppets every morning. Jakarta Museum Completed in 1627, the building initially served as the Dutch East Indies Company’s Town Hall. In 1705 and 1715, renovations were added. The Indonesian hero, Diponegoro, was said to have been imprisoned in its dungeon before his exile to South. The building was being used as military barracks early 1970s. Now a museum, it provides the background of Jakarta through displays of old maps and antiquities including furniture and porcelain.
